U.S. Should Not Enter
Immoral War

To the Editors,

I agree that Saddam Hussein must be disarmed.

If he were given reasonable deadlines and failed to meet them, and the UN supported it, I would not oppose the war, however...

The Bush administration continues to stand in front of the American people telling boldfaced lies. Mr. Rumsfeld just said that Iraq admitted that the missiles they’ve been destroying were in violation. This is a lie.

Iraq has always maintained that these missiles were within UN guidelines, but agreed to destroy them anyway.

This statement, like the president’s repeated linking of Saddam with the tragedy of 9/11, is a deliberate attempt to create a false impression and mislead the American public. A recent poll shows that 42% of the American people believe that Saddam Hussein was behind 9/11.

We know that there is no evidence of this. Indeed, we know who did it, and it wasn’t Iraq.

The support at home for this war is based on lies. Secretary Rumsfeld states that we “know” that Iraq has chemical and biological weapons, that they move them as much as every 12 hours, and they hide them in civilian areas.

Do we know where they are or not?

If we know where they hide them, why don’t we tell the inspectors to get them?

If we don’t know where they are, why say that we do?

They have said a time comes when you simply have to trust and support the president.

Remember the kind of “support” the Republicans gave to President Clinton, including when he was trying to disarm Iraq?

Why does this man, who was not even properly elected, and who is destroying our international relations, our economy, and our environment, deserve more?

Attempting to keep our nation from entering into an immoral that would have devastating repercussions, both abroad and at home, is the most patriotic thing a person can do.
